Migrants in a City are Receiving Higher Monthly SNAP Benefits compared to Alabama SNAP Recipients

Jamiesfeast – The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) reports that in 2022, a total of 761,100 residents in Alabama received SNAP Benefits.

According to the Alabama Department of Human Resources (DHR) SNAP application, a single household can receive a maximum monthly amount of $281 in SNAP benefits. Each additional person in the household can add $211, with a maximum of eight household members used to determine the SNAP benefit amount.

On February 5, 2024, Newsweek reported that migrants residing in New York City now have the opportunity to participate in a new program. Under this program, they will receive a monthly allowance of $350 specifically allocated for purchasing food and baby supplies.

According to an article from Newsweek, it was stated that…

Use is limited exclusively to local bodegas, grocery stores, supermarkets, and convenience stores to ensure that city funds are going to food and baby supplies. The Office of Mayor Eric Adams stressed that the cards will act similarly to SNAP benefits and Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards and that the program is a “cost saving measure” that will save the city $600,000 a month.

All program participants had to sign an affidavit confirming that the funds would be used for their intended purposes. Those who violated the affidavit would be expelled from the program.
