State legislators in Georgia took a significant step on Wednesday by introducing a bill aimed at dismissing the racketeering charges currently being faced by former President Donald Trump in the state.
Lawmakers in Georgia are taking action to prevent any politically-motivated prosecutions both now and in the future.
“Any pending prosecution pursuant to this chapter, where any part of the indictment or accusation alleges any violation contained within paragraph of this subsection, shall be discharged and dismissed by any court of this state exercising jurisdiction over such matter and shall be barred from being reindicted, reaccused, recommenced, or otherwise brought again in any court of this state,” the bill reads.
Former President and a group of co-defendants are currently facing racketeering charges in Georgia. They are being accused of trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
The case has been shrouded in controversy as Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has faced accusations of being involved in a romantic relationship with one of the prosecutors she appointed for the case. Defendants argue that this alleged conflict of interest undermines the fairness of the proceedings.
According to Trump, he believes that Willis’ charges against him are motivated by political reasons.
