Jamiesfeast – A mother in NC is taking legal action against a school district, claiming that officials compelled her children to change schools while they were experiencing homelessness. The lawsuit, as reported by The Hill, alleges that Gaston County Schools, the state coordinator for Education of Homeless Children, and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction forced the children, identified as “K.L.” in the suit, to leave their original schools during a time of great emotional upheaval.
In September 2023, K.L. faced an eviction from her residence while her children were studying at New Hope Elementary and Cramerton Middle School. With no place to go, K.L. had to switch her children to car riders as she searched for a new home. When she approached Gaston County district officials to negotiate a plan that would allow her children to continue attending the same schools while she looked for “affordable housing,” her request was denied.
One of her children also faced repercussions when they were removed from the middle school cheer team. In the lawsuit, Gaston Schools is being asked to reinstate the children in their original schools.
