Jamiesfeast – The Kentucky Senate has approved a resolution urging Governor Beshear to endorse Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s efforts to secure the southern border. This topic was brought up during the orders of the day, a time usually reserved for non-controversial resolutions. Republican Sponsor Johnnie Turner of Harlan emphasized the importance of protecting private property rights, stating, “Texans have a right to that.”
According to Turner, if people were trespassing on our property in Kentucky and bringing drugs like methamphetamine, we would be understandably upset and in need of assistance.
Democratic Louisville Senator Karen Berg expressed her opposition to the immigration-related resolution, emphasizing that the Senate, consisting of both elected and unelected individuals, possesses the power to address the issue at hand. She proposed a potential solution by urging the six U.S. representatives from Kentucky to vote in favor of the Senate border bill.
Christian County Senator Whitney Westerfield expressed his expectation of being the sole Republican voting against the resolution, emphasizing that the resolution would have no impact on the current situation. He further stated that Congress has become increasingly dysfunctional.
According to Westerfield, there are individuals who are more interested in preserving the problem as a political weapon against candidates they dislike, rather than actually finding a solution. This approach can be seen as cruel, as it prioritizes personal gain over addressing the issue at hand. These individuals would rather have the problem persist so they can use it to criticize others, rather than working towards resolving it.
Clark County GOP Senator Greg Elkins highlighted the significant contributions made by millions of people who legally immigrated to the U.S. via Ellis Island. Sharing his perspective, Northern Kentucky GOP Senator Gex Williams expressed his support for the resolution, particularly emphasizing the challenges faced by borderland property owners who strive to provide for their families and make a livelihood. The resolution swiftly progressed to the Senate floor and received approval through a voice vote. In a parallel development, a comparable resolution successfully passed the House, albeit after undergoing committee review.
