Jamiesfeast – Mississippi’s state auditor has once again urged Brett Favre to reimburse the state for welfare funds that were allegedly misused on projects supported by the former NFL quarterback. The state auditor filed court papers on Monday, reinforcing his demand for repayment.
Auditor Shad White has recently requested almost $730,000 from Favre, adding yet another layer of complexity to an ongoing legal dispute concerning funds intended to support impoverished individuals in one of the nation’s most economically challenged states.
In the court filing on Monday, White’s attorneys argued that Favre did not have any legal claim to the possession or control of the $1.1 Million.
In May 2020, Favre made a payment of $500,000 to the state, followed by an additional payment of $600,000 in October 2021. However, according to a recent court filing, it has been revealed that he still has a remaining balance of $729,790 due to the accumulation of interest on the original amount owed.
According to a statement made by White on Monday, it is astonishing that Mr. Favre believes he deserves a loan of $1.1 million in taxpayer money without any interest. This money is meant to help the underprivileged, and it is difficult to comprehend how he could think he is entitled to it.
The Associated Press reached out to two of Favre’s attorneys on Monday, leaving voicemail messages. However, they have not responded yet.
In October, a federal judge dismissed Favre’s defamation lawsuit against Shannon Sharpe, a former NFL player who is now a broadcaster. However, in May, Favre decided to drop his lawsuit against sportscaster Pat McAfee, a former NFL punter, after McAfee publicly apologized for his on-air comments accusing Favre of “stealing from poor people in Mississippi.”
Favre’s defamation lawsuit against White is still pending, and on Monday, White filed a counterclaim in response to this suit.
From 2016 to 2019, Mississippi prosecutors have revealed that numerous federal welfare funds designed to support low-income residents were misused on projects that benefited wealthy individuals or those with influential connections.
The Department of Human Services filed a lawsuit in 2022, alleging that TANF funds were used inappropriately. The funds were directed towards various projects, some of which were supported by Favre. One notable example is the allocation of $5 million for the construction of a volleyball arena. Additionally, $1.7 million was used for the development of a concussion treatment drug.
Favre has not faced any criminal charges, despite the fact that several others involved in the misspending, including a former department director, have pleaded guilty.
