Alabama Parents Charged After Signs Of Drowning And Malnourishment Found: The Watfords Case

Jamiesfeast – According to ABC News, a couple from Alabama, Mark Watford and Kelly Watford, both 53, are now in custody for an incident that occurred on June 14, 2023. Local authorities have charged them with felony murder after conducting an investigation.

In June 2023, the Alabama police and emergency personnel responded to a distress call concerning a child in need of medical assistance. Upon arrival, they discovered an unresponsive 6-year-old boy. The personnel immediately initiated life-saving procedures to aid the child before rushing him to a nearby hospital in Elmore County. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, the physicians pronounced the child deceased.

ABC News provided further details about the child’s condition at the time and reported:

Evidence consistent with a drowning was discovered during both medical treatment and post-mortem examination. Police said investigators also learned the child appeared to be extremely malnourished to the extent of only weighing around 21 pounds. Additional evidence was discovered that supported the child had sustained prolonged willful abuse and maltreatment.

Sprint Medical states that the average weight of a 6-year-old male is approximately 45.5 pounds. A male weighing 21 pounds is comparable to a one-year-old toddler.

According to Alabama’s WAKA, the mother has been charged with murder and was booked in June 2023. The father, on the other hand, is facing charges of aggravated child abuse with a bond set at $45,000. However, as of January 2024, his charges have been elevated to felony murder and he is being held without bond.

Please note that this is an ongoing case, and further information will be provided to the public as it becomes available.
