Jamiesfeast – Rep. Joe Neguse, a Democrat from Colorado, skillfully turned the tables on his Republican colleague, Rep. Mark Green from Tennessee, by using Green’s own words against him on the topic of impeachment. Neguse pointed out that Green had expressed a different opinion in an opinion piece he wrote five years ago when former President Donald Trump was facing a similar inquiry.
During a committee hearing on Monday, the Colorado lawmaker presented Chairman Green with an editorial regarding the Republicans’ impeachment resolution against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
“I will make sure to include it in the official records as ‘Americans are The Victims of The Impeachment Inquiry’,” stated Neguse. He further added, “The subtitle of the record will emphasize that there is a significant amount of bipartisan legislation that is being ignored while the focus remains solely on the impeachment inquiry.”
Neguse then asked, “I assume you disagree with this?”
Green responded with a simple yet confident affirmation, “I do.”
Neguse found Green’s response to be quite intriguing as he pointed out that those were Green’s own words. To emphasize his point, Neguse held up the physical copy of the article for Green to examine.
Neguse referred to an opinion piece written by Green in The Tennessean during the impeachment debate of former President Trump five years ago.
He commented, expressing his fascination, on the change in tune.
Neguse later quoted an article from The New York Times published last April. The article stated that Green had made a promise to donors that he would present an impeachment case against Mayorkas.
Neguse was once again displeased with the situation.
He expressed his concerns, stating, “This is before your committee has heard from Secretary Mayorkas. It’s before you’ve had the witnesses that have apparently come before your committee. It’s before you’ve had any meaningful debate. You decide a year ago?”
The draft impeachment document by the House GOP accuses Mayorkas of intentionally making false statements and obstructing lawful oversight of the Department of Homeland Security. It further claims that he deliberately and systematically failed to comply with the law by implementing a “catch and release scheme” for migrants before their court dates.
Mayorkas has dismissed the accusations against him as “baseless.” Even some Republicans in Congress are skeptical of the move, with Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) labeling it as a mere “stunt” and a “political gimmick.”
On Monday night, the House Rules Committee made the decision to send the impeachment articles to the House floor. The vote was 8-4, with the decision falling along party lines. It is worth noting that Republicans currently hold a one-member majority in the House.
